As fuel prices soar, switching to a Nissan EV could save motorists more than £1,600 a year

  • As fuel prices remain high and household budgets are under pressure, EVs offer motorists a practical way to cut everyday motoring costs.
  • A typical motorist could save more than £1,600 a year vs a similar petrol-powered model.
  • Nissan has been building EVs for more than 15 years, with three great options available today and two more coming next year.

London, UK — The cost-of-living crisis is something that impacts us all, not least the current fuel prices we’re seeing.

For drivers considering their next car, switching to an EV could be one of the most effective ways to save money.

Our latest analysis shows that someone driving 12,000 miles per year could save more than £1,600 annually by choosing an all-electric Nissan MICRA over a comparable petrol-powered supermini.

A year of filling up a typical petrol-powered supermini costs approximately £1,860, based on a vehicle achieving just over 50mpg, travelling 12,000 miles annually and fuel priced at £1.72 per litre.

In contrast, powering the all-new, all-electric Nissan MICRA over the same distance could cost as little as £208 per year when charged at home on an off-peak energy tariff.

That's a potential annual saving of £1,652 - enough to cover a family holiday, significantly reduce household energy bills, or help with many of the everyday costs facing the UK public today.

James Taylor, Managing Director Nissan Motor GB said:

  1. "With many households continuing to feel the pressure of higher living costs, drivers are understandably looking more closely at the day-to-day cost of running their cars.
  2. “What our analysis shows is that choosing an EV isn't just good for the environment; it can make a real difference to our pockets. A saving of more than £1,600 per year is meaningful money for most, and demonstrates why more drivers are making the switch to electric.
  3. “Nissan has been pioneering electric mobility for more than 15 years and today our EV range offers customers the best of both worlds: significantly lower running costs and the confidence of impressive real-world range.
  4. “Whether it's the all-new MICRA or LEAF, ARIYA, or even PIXO or JUKE – both coming next year – going electric with Nissan means drivers can worry less about fuel costs and spend more time enjoying the road ahead.”

Notes to editors

Petrol costs have been calculated based on a typical UK price for unleaded fuel at the time of writing (£1.72 per litre on 2 October 2026).

MICRA 40kWh Engage has a WLTP combined energy consumption of 4.38 miles per kWh.

Comparative WLTP combined figures of 50.44mpg for a combustion-engined car taken from the best-selling equivalent-sized B-segment hatchback in the UK, fitted with a petrol engine and automatic gearbox.

Domestic electricity prices both quoted from Octopus Energy, based on tariffs available to a Milton Keynes postcode in October 2026. Off-peak (night) rates quoted from Intelligent Octopus Go (7.6p/kWh between 23:30 and 05:30).
