Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
1 October 2001
INXPENSIVE X‑TRAIL
Nissan can reveal that prices for the X‑TRAIL, the most carefully considered compact 4x4 yet created according to its manufacturer, will start from £16,750 for the 2.0 S rising to £20,895 for the 2.2Di SE+. The figures are less than Nissan had originally guestimated for the car that’s on sale now.
There’s a choice of two engines – a 2.0-litre 140PS petrol and 2.2-litre 114PS diesel – each being available in three trim levels – S, Sport and SE+ – which results in a total of six models. The standard kit list, however, will take rather longer to go through: listen up Land Rover, Honda, Toyota and Jeep.
Every X‑TRAIL has electronic, so faster reacting, four-wheel drive offering a choice of three press-a-button modes. These include an auto one designed to give the driver maximum security (and fun) on-road as well as traction for the 1% of the time the car goes off-. Active and passive safety features fitted to every X‑TRAIL include driver and passenger airbags, as well as anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist. Talking of brakes, the X‑TRAIL is the only car in its class with discs front and rear. Security is taken care of by anti-hijack remote operated central ‘super’-locking with Nissan’s engine immobiliser. And for convenience, every X‑TRAIL comes with electric windows all round and electrically adjustable door mirrors. Also fitted across the range is an electrical glass ‘sky’ roof that opens wider than any competitor’s.
Every X‑TRAIL benefits, too, from Nissan’s utility minded approach to design. In other words, because it’s a compact 4x4 the X‑TRAIL could be used for anything from a one-up tootle to work through to team transport for an assault on a snow-topped mountain – well, you never know – so is therefore packed with features that make doing whatever as easy as possible.
For example, the boot is not covered in likely-to-be-ruined carpet. And the doors take the sill with them as they open so your trousers don’t bring half a field into the office on a Monday morning after a Sunday before spent X‑TRAIL-ing through mud. The instruments are centrally mounted meaning that the steering wheel can be perfectly adjusted and the driver gets his or her own lidded box with 12V power socket to simultaneously store and charge the mobile. A supply of coke (as in the drink) can be stashed in two can-sized holders either side of the radio and you even get a fold-down flap in the rear seat back large enough to take two snowboards. Or more likely enough bamboo poles to help yield a bumper crop of runner beans.
Go for the X‑TRAIL Sport, petrol or diesel, and you get (on top of the bits already mentioned) rather unusual dimpled and wipeable seat fabric, lumbar adjustment for the driver, side airbags and automatic climate control that’s a step better than rivals’ manual air conditioning. The can holders can now cool, the music system is pumped up to a six-speaker single CD/tape/radio unit and an alarm’s fitted, too. It’s differentiated externally by a set of easy-to-clean 16” alloy wheels, body coloured bumpers with black over-riders and a roof spoiler. And all that for just £1245 more than the X‑TRAIL S.
Topping out the range and its rivals for equipment is the SE+. The seats are covered in leather that’s as practical as it is luxurious and front mounted bottoms can be lightly toasted or deep fried by standard heaters. Leather also gets applied to the steering wheel rim and gear lever, door mirrors fold away electrically on demand, the central console grows to incorporate an adjustable armrest, and audio controls are mounted on the steering wheel to also manage the standard 6CD autochanger – all for £1900 over the price of the X‑TRAIL Sport. So one isn’t mistaken for the other, the SE+ gets full colour-coding of its bodywork, too.
The
standard 2.0-litre petrol engine, rated at 140PS, gets the X‑TRAIL to 62 mph in
11.3 seconds with a combined cycle fuel economy figure of 30.4 mpg. The 2.2Di 114PS turbodiesel unit, as well as
stumping up 270 Nm of torque at 2000 rpm, is needless-to-say even more of a
fuel sipper achieving 39.2 mpg over the same run. It’s the first Nissan to employ common rail
technology for even greater efficiency and the X‑TRAIL 2.2Di will be the only
car of its type in the Ikea car park with a six speed manual gearbox. Diesel X-TRAILs are priced at £1000 above the
equivalently trimmed petrol version.
Incidentally, anyone considering an X‑TRAIL as their company car
shouldn’t be too shocked by a benefit charge of 26% of P11D value for the
petrol model and 23% (including 3% penalty) for the diesel – both these figures
apply from the 6 April, 2002 company car tax changes.
The factory-fitted options list includes metallic paint (£250), automatic transmission for the 2.0-litre models (£1000) and … that’s it apart from unique-for-the-class ESP+ offered only on the 2.0 SE+ manual. The system deserves a little more explanation as it’s not just an electronic stability programme. ESP+ integrates the anti-lock brakes and electronic brakeforce distribution with an active brake limited slip differential and the ALL MODE 4x4 system to give even greater on-road stickability and off-road mobility for a price of £750.
The dealer-fit options list is rather longer. In styling the X‑TRAIL, Nissan minimised on flash with only a hint of butch but customers can add more of both if they wish from the long list of bumper bars, side-steps and other add-ons. More sensible is Nissan’s rear park system available for the first time on one of the company’s 4x4s. Anyone who regularly ventures into pastures or rather city centres new can throw away the A to Z and rely on Nissan’s Birdview navigation system instead. As well as saving lost time – literally – Birdview has even been known to preserve marriages that might previously have been rocked by navigational arguments. And roof-racks, luggage nets, towbars … they’re also available. However, Nissan regrets that any customer requesting a can of spray-on mud will be appropriately told to ‘bog off’.
