José Muñoz serves as Nissan Motor Corporation’s Chief Performance Officer (CPO), a position he was appointed to in November 2016. In this role, he reports directly to CEO Hiroto Saikawa.
As CPO, Muñoz is responsible for the company’s overall results and the implementation of strategies to ensure efficiency and transparency in Nissan’s global operations. From 2014 to January 2018, he served as Chairman of Nissan North America (NNA), overseeing operations – including manufacturing, engineering, design, sales and marketing, administration, and finance – in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. During his tenure as Chairman of NNA, Muñoz quickly made the region a major contributor to Nissan’s global operations. By 2016, Nissan had become the fastest growing auto brand in the U.S. and achieved record sales during both 2016 and 2017.
These performance results mirror what Nissan achieved in Mexico under Muñoz's leadership. In 2009, just five years after joining Nissan, he was named President of Nissan Mexicana. During his tenure, the division achieved the highest market share in its history and Nissan saw a 42-month run of being #1 in the market.
In April 2012, Muñoz became responsible for sales and marketing for Latin America and customer quality and dealer network development for the Americas. Prior to joining Nissan, he worked in various management positions with other automotive companies in Europe.
A native of Spain, Muñoz speaks Spanish, English, and French. He holds a Doctorate in nuclear engineering from Polytechnic University of Madrid and an MBA from Instituto de Empresa Business School in Madrid. He has also completed other executive management programs from Cranfield School of Management in the U.K. and INSEAD Business School in France.
