NEW AUTOMATIC FOR TERRANO II

Nissan has announced the introduction of four-speed automatic transmission to the Terrano II range.  From 1 August, five-door turbo diesel SE and SE Touring models will be available with the option of automatic transmission.

Automatic transmission in the 4x4 market

In 1997, 34 per cent of all 4x4s sold in the UK were fitted with automatic transmission.  Nissan is one of just six manufacturers to offer the advantages of an automatic transmission with the frugality of a diesel engine.   Neither the Vauxhall Frontera nor the Chrysler Jeep® offer automatic transmission in combination with a diesel engine. Terrano II sales in the first half of 1998 have increased by 21 per cent compared with the same period in 1997 and demand for the automatic transmission is expected to account for 20 per cent of total Terrano II sales.

Terrano II automatic transmission

The Terrano II’s four-speed automatic transmission features a manual overdrive switch and a three-way automatic mode control switch which allows performance to be adjusted to sporty, normal or winter driving.  When in winter mode, engine torque is reduced when the car is started and during acceleration.  Noise levels have also been reduced by 2 decibels over the equivalent manual models, further heightening the Terrano II’s refined feel.

The Terrano II automatic develops 125PS at 3600rpm and 205lb ft of torque at just 2000rpm giving excellent flexibility and available performance both on and off-road.

Automatic transmission is available as part of an option with ABS for the five-door SE model costing £1,450 and for £950 on the SE Touring where ABS is fitted as standard. The on-the-road price for the five-door SE automatic is £23,845 and £25,820 for the SE Touring automatic.

Specification

The Terrano II automatic, like it’s manual equivalent, is generously equipped offering many safety and comfort features as standard.  Driver’s airbag, anti-lock brakes (ABS), air-conditioning, electric windows and alloy wheels are all standard while many competitors offer these as cost options.
