NEW NISSAN PRIMERA WILL HAVE EMISSIONS
SELF-CHECK SYSTEM
The new Nissan Primera will be able to continuously check its own ‘green’ credentials.
An On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) system will warn the driver if emissions are exceeding strict standards soon to be introduced across Europe. The system detects any component or system deterioration that might affect the car’s low emission levels.
The OBD system detects even a momentary increase in emissions, the driver is immediately alerted and a record made of the episode in the vehicle’s engine management system. If the situation persists, an indicator light remains on until it has been investigated and resolved by a dealer.
The OBD system senses things such as the engine misfiring or the catalyst malfunctioning that may affect emission levels.
The new Nissan Primera, to be launched in September, is designed to have the lowest possible impact on the environment. The Primera’s all-new 1.8-litre engine is one of the cleanest petrol engines in its class. It exceeds European legislation emission levels of harmful hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (Nox) not due until 2005.

Variable valve timing and direct ignition are key to the engine’s low emissions. The new engine also features swirl control valve technology to ensure efficient combustion and cleaner emissions.
The new Primera will be built at Nissan’s Sunderland factory, the most productive in Europe. The car plant has recently achieved the ISO 14001 accreditation for its environmental management system.
Some 5,400 people are employed directly by Nissan in the UK. The company’s operations include vehicle styling, manufacturing, distribution and sales, industrial machinery and finance.
