NISSAN EXTENDS CHROMAFLAIR® PAINT TO MICRA

Nissan was the first car manufacturer in Europe to launch a production model using ChromaFlair® paint – the Primera GT special edition in “Mystic Green” which went on sale in April this year.  Nissan’s award winning supermini, the Micra, will be displayed at the Birmingham Motorshow using the same high-tech paint finish with colours that change from red to gold.

The colour shifting ability of the paint has been developed using leading edge technology. The paint is produced using ChromaFlair® pigments that are manufactured by using ultra-thin layers of colourless materials. The pigment is in the form of tiny flakes just a few micrometers in size. Although the materials that make up the flake are colourless, ChromaFlair® pigments create colour through the physics of light interference. Different colours are produced by precisely controlling the thickness of the layers within the pigments’ structure.

The ChromaFlair® pigment is mixed with standard automotive paint and applied using conventional processes.

Nissan’s European Technology Centre (NETC) in Cranfield played a key role in bringing ChromaFlair® paint technology to the UK. NETC has worked closely with the paint supplier Dupont Kansai Automotive Coating Ltd and the pigment manufacturer Flex Products, Inc. to bring this innovative product to the market in a short space of time.
