NISSAN IS FIT TO BE THE BEST IN EUROPE
The most productive car plant in Europe, is now also the healthiest place to work in Britain according to the Health Education Authority.
Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) in Sunderland is the first company to be presented with the authority’s highest Health at Work award (category three), two years running.
Nissan’s occupational health team has continuously improved its workplace health initiatives since the company won the first award in 1996. Over six hundred health talks have been delivered by the team on issues such as sensible eating and drinking, the benefits of physical activity and guidance on preventative measures like testicular self examination.
Barry Tupper is Nissan’s senior health and safety engineer responsible for leading the health initiatives. He says: “In addition to the excellent work carried out by our occupational health team, the Health Education Authority also looked closely at our plans for a new sports centre for staff and the community, on-site gym and the provision of new bike sheds. They also reviewed with interest the benefits booklet provided to all employees which highlights the Nissan pension scheme and private healthcare for the family.”
Anne Chandler, Health at Work award project manager comments: “The award is given for achieving specific standards in a wide range of health management issues. The higher the category the tougher the standards become. To win an award for the second time shows Nissan’s commitment to workplace health.”
Nissan was the first manufacturer to win a Health at Work award (top category) in 1996. It has only ever been given to 25 other organisations.
Nissan’s operations in the UK include vehicle design and development, styling, engineering, manufacturing, distribution and sales, industrial machinery and corporate finance. Some 5,400 people are employed directly by Nissan in the UK.
Nissan’s Sunderland workforce is the most productive in Europe, averaging 98 cars per employee.
