NISSAN WINS AWARD FOR SUPPLY CHAIN EXCELLENCE

Nissan’s Sunderland car plant, Europe’s most productive and the UK’s largest, has received recognition for its excellent supply chain management; the whole process from the manufacturing of components at suppliers to the delivery of the finished vehicle to the customer.

The company has won a 1998 Award for Excellence in Supply Chain Management operated in association with KPMG Management Consulting, Logistics Europe and Excel Logistics.  It is one of only six companies to win an award.

Brian Scholey, chairman of the judging panel from KPMG said:  “Nissan in Sunderland has been presented with this award because of the ‘partnership approach’ it has with its suppliers and the way it has integrated planning with production.

“Nissan operates a Just In Time (JIT) based supply system. By working with its suppliers, the company has developed a logistics scheme which comprises component collection, JIT delivery and a reusable packaging system.”

Roy Dudley, Nissan production control manager, said:  “European distribution demands ever shorter lead times, finished stock reduction and increasing flexibility.  By working closely with all our suppliers we ensure we can meet all of our customers’ requirements.”

Since Nissan in Sunderland started manufacturing vehicles in 1986 it has spent  £6.835 billion on components with 200 suppliers in Europe, of which 70 per cent has been in the UK.
