LONDON – Nissan is delighted that the all-new Nissan Qashqai has been awarded the Safety Award at the 2022 What Car? Car of the Year Awards.

Sponsored by Thatcham Research, the Safety Award is given to a model that represents the highest standards in occupant protection and recognises manufacturers that put safety at the top of their priority list.

This prestigious accolade follows Qashqai's success in the recent Euro NCAP Best in Class Cars of 2021, where the model was the highest rated in the 'Small Off-Road' category.

On the Qashqai's success, Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car? said; "One of the reasons that the new Nissan Qashqai is the 2022 What Car? Safety Award winner is that its overall Euro NCAP score is among the best of all the cars tested in the last 12 months. But for us it's just as significant that such safety comes in a relatively affordable family SUV, because it puts it within reach of so many drivers. The Qashqai protects its occupants in a crash just as well as some models that cost four times as much. And all trim levels come with a suite of very effective active safety systems that minimise the chances of you being involved in an accident in the first place."

The all-new Nissan Qashqai offers an uncompromising set of segment-leading safety technologies, many of which are standard-fit, to protect both occupants and other road users. A number of these technologies are introduced for the first-time on the all-new Qashqai, and some are a first for the C-SUV segment.

These include Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Front Emergency Braking, Rear Emergency Braking, Intelligent Cruise Control and Emergency Lane Keeping, as well as a new central front airbag and adaptive driving beams.

Andrew Humberstone, Managing Director Nissan Motor (GB) Ltd. added, "As Nissan works towards a goal of zero emissions and zero fatalities, we are proud to produce cars that deliver outstanding levels of road safety. Naturally we are delighted that our tireless efforts in developing these important safety technologies continue to be officially recognised as setting the benchmark, not just for the class but for the whole industry. The What Car? Safety Award is a credit to the teams who have put so much effort into making the all-new Qashqai one of the safest, and most desirable cars on the road today."

The all-new Nissan Qashqai was recently awarded the top five-star safety rating by the independent European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), under the new, more stringent 2020-2022 protocol.

Euro NCAP scored the new Qashqai 91% for both adult and child occupant protection, placing it among the best of its competitive group. A near maximum score of 23.8 out of a possible 24 was achieved for child occupant protection and a maximum 12 points was achieved for the child restraint seat installation check.

Euro NCAP recognises that it is always preferable to prevent accidents in the first place, and awards points for technology which helps drivers avoid collisions. The Qashqai also scored exceptionally high here with a 95% rating, thanks to Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies.

New Qashqai Safety Highlights

Standard features fitted to all grades

  • Intelligent Forward Collision Warning (New to all-new Qashqai) this technology reduces the risk of collision with the preceding vehicle due to changes in traffic ahead. A radar sensor in the front of the vehicle detects the distance between the two cars ahead as well as their relative speeds to help create a comprehensive image of what is happening on the road. An audible and visual warning will apply in the first instance before emergency braking systems are engaged to help prevent a collision.
  • Intelligent Front Emergency Braking (Upgraded for all-new Qashqai) with pedestrian, cyclist recognition and junction assist. On recognizing a hazard in front of the vehicle, an emergency brake is applied to decelerate and help avoid a collision; the same technology is used to prevent crashes with oncoming vehicles when turning across the opposite lane.
  • Rear Emergency Braking (New to all-new Qashqai) detects objects and obstacles whilst reversing. An audible and visual warning will apply in the first instance before emergency braking systems are engaged.
  • Intelligent Cruise Control (Existing Safety Shield Technology) helps the driver to maintain their distance from other vehicles. By measuring the distance from the car in front, Qashqai controls its acceleration and deceleration to maintain a suitable following distance at a set speed.
  • Emergency Lane Keeping (New to all-new Qashqai) is an enhancement on existing lane support systems which offers a suite of technologies to help you avoid an unintentional departure from your lane. In case of an emergency where the vehicle detects that it is drifting, Qashqai can pull itself back in to the centre of its lane.
  • A Central Air Bag (New to all-new Qashqai) deploys from between the two front seats, to prevent the front row occupants from making contact in the event of a side-impact. The central airbag supplements the driver and passenger airbags, as well as the side and curtain airbags fitted as standard to the new Qashqai.

Standard from Tekna grade

  • Adaptive Driving Beams (New to all-new Qashqai) are a ground-breaking technology that use adaptive matrix LED high beam headlights; which individually control each segment of the headlight to maximize night time visibility and automatically reduce brightness and dazzling of oncoming traffic. It allows each of the 12 light segments to operate independently to ensure optimized safety for both the driver and other road users.
  • ProPILOT with Navi-link (Upgraded for all-new Qashqai) is able to accelerate and brake the vehicle within a single-lane on a highway. The system can accelerate the vehicle to cruise at a set speed, brake the vehicle, hold your position within a lane and even decelerate down to 0mph in heavy stop-start traffic. The updated system is also now able to connect to Qashqai's TOMTOM navigation system to anticipate bends in the road, changes to speed limits and acknowledges upcoming off-ramps, to adjust your speed more smoothly and give you greater control.
