NISSAN NAVARA PICK-UP SPARKS LIFE INTO CENTRAL NETWORKS

Central Networks is taking delivery of 47 Nissan Navara King Cab pickups, specifically developed and adapted to help it restore supplies of electricity to five million customers around the central network region 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

Part of E.ON, the second largest energy supplier in the UK, and responsible for keeping the region’s electricity supply running smoothly, Central Networks opted for the Navara after it proved to be the only pickup in its class capable of carrying 800kg of equipment and towing 3000kg at the same time.

Nissan beat six other manufacturers to the major contract.

‘You can liken our job to that of the AA as our team of restoration craftsmen have to respond to power related supply problems when householder’s electricity goes off,’ explained James Norris, Central Networks’ Restoration Contracts Manager.

‘Our team’s job is to get power up and running quickly so the vehicle we use has to be reliable as it is on call around the clock and must be flexible to accommodate the equipment needed to fix electricity related problems.’

‘The vehicle’s 133PS diesel is big enough to cope with towing and should still return around 40mpg. The four-wheel drive system ensures our craftsmen can access the most arduous of locations,’ he added.

Central Networks has taken advantage of Nissan’s Special Vehicle service that brings together a wide range of specialist vehicle services under one umbrella.

Nissan worked with ATT Papworth and van racking specialist Edstrom to ensure the vehicle was built to Central Networks’ exacting standard. ATT built a special lockable top to make the pickup secure, while Edstrom has kitted out each vehicle with a range of racking and shelving. Towbars have been fitted to enable the Navara to also tow generators.

Nissan’s one stop service ensures that bespoke vehicles are delivered to the customer kitted out and ready to start work, this includes everything down to the vinyl graphics.

Each vehicle will be run over four years and will cover around 20,000 miles per annum.
