POWER LIFT FOR BOB THE BUILDER’S BEST MATE

The Nissan Cabstar E has long been a favourite of Bob the Builders, aspiring Ground Force teams … in fact anyone who needs the carry all ability of a light truck. They’re going to like the 2002 model even more because Nissan has pumped up its power output and its torque.  And, with every new Cabstar E put to work before the end of March, Nissan will chuck in three years or 36,000 miles of free servicing plus three years’ RAC cover.  Yet prices change not one penny.

The Cabstar E range was launched little over a year ago with a choice of two engines tagged purely and simply 90 and 110 after their respective power outputs in PS. The new for 2002 range is called 95 and 120.  So guess what the increased power ratings are?  Think now.  Yes, that’s it … 95 and 120PS.

It’s not just horse power that’s up, pulling power – or torque to the technically minded – gets a rise, too.  In the case of the 2.7-litre turbo diesel 95PS unit, there’s now 210Nm at 2000 rpm to lug with. The outgoing 90 engine mustered 200Nm at a less handy 2200 rpm.  But it’s the new 120PS, direct injection 3.0-litre turbo diesel powerhouse that really majors on muscle.  It’s now got 272Nm of torque, also at a near crawling 2000 rpm. To compare, the 110 engine it replaces gave 260Nm at 2100 rpm.  The Cabstar E’s fuel tank is now made of plastic to reduce weight and prolong its life.  And to mark the changes, Nissan has taken the dramatic step of … fitting clear lensed front indicators.

Other than that, it’s business as usual. Service intervals, increased with the introduction of the Cabstar E, remain at 6000 miles for the 2.7-litre and at a lengthy

12,000 for the 3.0. The 95, like the 90 it replaces, comes in short wheelbase form with a choice of two factory bodies, chassis cab and dropside with a tipper conversion available through Nissan dealers. Equipped with a double-wheeled rear axle, the 120 comes in a wider list of varieties including medium wheelbase chassis cab or dropside, and on the conversion list a tipper or box van. There’s also a six seating, double cab version with the option of a dropside body.  Finally, there’s the long wheelbase 120 which can be teamed with a single or double chassis cab and with dropside or tipper bodies.

The Cabstar E 95 grosses at 3200 kg with a 1650 kg capacity front axle – for the 120, these figures are 3500 and 1750 kg respectively.  Payloads range from 1600 kg (including body, cargo and passenger/s) for the 95 up to 1810 kg for the 120 medium wheelbase chassis cab.  Power steering comes with every Cabstar E along with a three year/60,000 mile warranty in addition to the free servicing/RAC cover offer detailed above.

Prices?  Well, they still range from £12,325 for the 2.7TD chassis cab up to £18,990 for a 3.0Di double cab, long wheelbase tipper.  Both are quoted exclusive of VAT and Charlie Dymock with optional water feature.
