Nissan's bold vision for the future of crossover design has become a reality with the European debut of the exciting and innovative Resonance concept.

Created by Nissan Design America under the direction of Nissan Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura, the Resonance reinforces Nissan's strength and leadership in the crossover sector. Demonstrated by cutting-edge vehicles such as Qashqai, Juke and Murano, the Resonance pushes the boundaries of design and clearly signposts the next generation of crossovers.

Francois Bancon, Nissan Division General Manager, Product Strategy and Planning said: "Resonance is meant to be provocative, energetic and engaging - even polarizing. Its edgy yet sophisticated design, combined with an environmentally sensitive powertrain and intelligent utility provides a clear, exciting view into the future of crossover innovation.

"This design is not meant to appeal to traditional two-box SUV shoppers, but rather to those whose fashion and design choices make a statement. For Nissan, this concept makes our statement about the future of this segment."

Energetic, premium exterior design

Fusing dynamic lines with bold details, the exterior design of the Resonance concept pushes the boundaries of crossover design. Drawing inspiration from visions of futuristic space travel, the Nissan design team worked to combine lightweight aerodynamic smoothness with the feeling of protection and security.

The front end is characterised by a powerful metallic grille surround that projects sharp crease lines up the bonnet and out towards the boomerang-shaped headlamp clusters.  Deep surfacing lines give the side aspect a muscular appearance, while the kicked up window line and pillar-less rear three-quarter accentuate length and the feeling of premium sophistication.

The roof's unique ‘floating' design has been achieved through the use of slim A-pillars, a full-length glass panel and a hidden D-pillar. By removing the conventional upright elements, Nissan's designers were able to create a flowing structure with a generous glass area and a genuine feeling of interior spaciousness.

Finished in distinctive Flare Orange paintwork, the Resonance is a car that captivates with its detail. From the satin-chrome 22-inch wheels to the bold rear light clusters that faithfully follow the rear crease line, the Resonance exudes elegance and purpose from every angle.

Futuristic VIP lounge interior

Welcoming yet exclusive, high-tech yet premium, the interior of the Resonance concept was inspired by the design team's vision of first-class space travel. The resulting ‘VIP lounge' has a sophisticated look and feel, with premium materials and exquisite detailing.

Bathed in natural light, the interior introduces a number of futuristic details, including sequential welcome lighting that highlights the natural detail in the wooden surfaces, and an advanced floating instrument panel. Positioned within a generous centre console, this panel creates a forum where the driver can access all infotainment and communication features. Technology is layered to give a holographic experience, with information filtered and presented in order of importance.

The panoramic glass roof provides passengers with a unique view of the world, with floating elements like the roof lining add to the sense of space. The interior atmosphere is further enhanced by sculpted door panels and an elegant centre console.

Bancon adds: "The Resonance interior reflects the enlightened modernity of today's crossover buyer, who values an amazing experience over traditional indulgence. The architecture of the cabin is open and structured. Like the exterior, it redefines and pushes the segment beyond convention."

Dynamic, sustainable drivetrain

Although the Resonance is presented purely as a concept, it showcases a highly efficient hybrid electric drivetrain. Nissan understands that crossover drivers want to balance personal mobility with respect for environment, and have designed a drivetrain that delivers on both levels.

The all-wheel drive Resonance features Nissan's innovative ‘one-motor, two-clutch' system that combines a small displacement petrol engine with an electric motor and lithium ion battery. Drive is distributed to the wheels via Nissan's next-generation Xtronic CVT transmission.
