NEW NISSAN WILL BE ‘MADE IN SUNDERLAND’
Nissan’s UK manufacturing workforce, the most productive in the European car industry, has been given the go ahead to build the next generation Nissan Primera.
Nissan has confirmed that the next generation model will be built at the world class manufacturing plant in Sunderland, UK. Investment will be in the region of £200 million.
John Cushnaghan, managing director, Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) said: “The Sunderland workforce is a winning team. Their commitment to quality and determination to be the best in the industry has won this investment. In my opinion they are the best in the world. I am delighted that the next Primera will be built here in Sunderland.”
Over one million Nissan Primeras have been built in Sunderland since the car was first introduced to Europe in May 1990, when it replaced the Nissan Bluebird. Around £600 million is spent each year with 205 European suppliers making components for the Primera; 128 are based in the UK.
The Nissan car plant in Sunderland is nearly 40 per cent more productive than its nearest rivals in Europe. It has a tremendous quality record and established just-in-time links to important suppliers in the region. The UK is also the largest market for the Primera.
Nissan’s operations in the UK include vehicle styling, engineering, manufacturing, distribution and sales, industrial machinery and corporate finance. Some 5,400 people are employed directly by Nissan in the UK.
